The rule for doctors in Singapore
Singapore Medical Council lists OET grade B in all four components, obtained in one sitting and within two years of the test. This is a medical registration evidence rule; it is not proof that the Singapore Nursing Board or another professional council uses the same threshold. SMC’s document instructions also distinguish Clinical Observers, who do not need to submit English-test results for that temporary observer role and are not permitted to manage patients primarily or prescribe treatment under that role.
| Requirement | SMC |
|---|---|
| Listening | 350 (B) |
| Reading | 350 (B) |
| Writing | 350 (B) |
| Speaking | 350 (B) |
| One sitting / combining | Single sitting required. |
| Validity | Within two years from the date of the test. |

What to aim for in practice
Doctors preparing for the SMC English-test route should track one complete four-B profile. If the limiting skill is Writing, practise a Medicine referral that leads with the request and supports it with selected findings. If it is Speaking, rehearse a patient conversation that includes uncertainty and questions, not just a rehearsed explanation. A practice estimate near 350 needs a margin and repetition; it cannot replace the official score report or establish registration eligibility.
| Skill | Official component target / floor | OETAce conservative practice guide |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 350 (B) | 32/42 gives an estimated 350–370 |
| Reading | 350 (B) | 32/42 gives an estimated 350–370 |
These raw-mark ranges use the same estimate as our test marker. They are a study aid, not an official OET conversion or registration decision. Part A alone cannot predict a score for a full 42-question test. Review Writing and Speaking feedback separately.
