OET score for doctors in Canada

Most Canadian medical regulators follow the FMRAC model standard: OET Medicine with grade B (350 or more) in each sub-test, in the same sitting, taken within the last 24 months. Ontario's CPSO states exactly this (checked 21 Oct 2026).

The rule for doctors in Canada

Canadian medical registration is provincial. Ontario’s CPSO applies the FMRAC model requirement of OET Medicine with B in each component, from the same sitting and within twenty-four months. This page explains that documented Ontario pathway; it does not turn a model standard into a promise for every province or residency programme. The source regulator data mentions a possible Newfoundland and Labrador exception only second-hand, so it is not used as an alternative route here.

What to aim for in practice

For a doctor using the CPSO pathway, a Writing score of 300 falls below the Ontario target even though it can meet the ECFMG Writing threshold. Practise a referral that identifies the clinical question before compressing the history. In Speaking, explain investigations without unnecessary jargon and ask what worries the patient. Compare the full four-skill practice profile with the CPSO rule and keep the application date in view.
