The rule for speech pathologists in UK
HCPC lists a profession-specific OET route for speech and language therapists: a total of 1800, with every component at least 400. Speech and language therapy has a substantially higher listed standard than the other HCPC professions: a 1800 total and no element below 400. Four 400 scores reach only 1600, so the individual floor is not the complete target. HCPC requires a certificate no more than two years old when the application arrives and specifies testing at an official centre rather than at home.

What to aim for in practice
For a UK speech and language therapy application, a study plan built around the usual B target is too low. Even four 400 scores reach only 1600, so the 1800 total needs additional performance above the individual floors. Practise explaining a communication or swallowing assessment in accessible steps, then check whether the patient had room to ask questions. In your letter, distinguish the assessment findings from the care instructions and name the support requested. Monitor the whole profile rather than a single strong Speaking estimate.
| Skill | Official component target / floor | OETAce conservative practice guide |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 400 (B) | 37/42 gives an estimated 400–430 |
| Reading | 400 (B) | 37/42 gives an estimated 400–430 |
The figures above cover the component floors only. Add all four official scores and check the 1800 total separately.
These raw-mark ranges use the same estimate as our test marker. They are a study aid, not an official OET conversion or registration decision. Part A alone cannot predict a score for a full 42-question test. Review Writing and Speaking feedback separately.
