OET score for doctors registering in Australia: AHPRA and the Medical Board (2026)
Doctors who sit OET on or after 23 April 2026 need at least 350 in Listening, 360 in Reading, 350 in Writing and 360 in Speaking to meet the English standard that AHPRA applies for the Medical Board of Australia; OET@Home is not accepted.
Minimum OET scores
0–500 per sub-testThis is the same English standard AHPRA applies to every national board. The Australian Medical Council (AMC) assesses qualifications and runs exams; this page covers the English line for registration. If an AMC step asks for English evidence of its own, check the AMC.
The rules around the lines
- Lines apply
- For OET sittings on or after 23 April 2026.
- Combining sittings
- Up to two sittings within 12 months can be combined. You must sit all four sub-tests each time, and neither sitting can go below Listening 320, Reading 340, Writing 350 or Speaking 350. Results from a different English test can't be mixed in.
- OET@Home
- Not accepted. Paper-based tests and computer tests at a test venue are accepted; the boards have accepted the remotely delivered Speaking part of a venue computer test.
- Validity
- 2 years. If you combine two sittings, the 2 years run from the earlier one.
- Single sub-test resit
- AHPRA lists IELTS One Skill Retake as the only single-skill resit it accepts, so an OET single sub-test resit won't count.
- Version
- Take the Medicine version of OET.

Questions candidates ask
What changed for doctors on 23 April 2026?
Before that date AHPRA asked for grade B in Listening, Reading and Speaking and C+ in Writing. From 23 April 2026 the lines are numeric: 350 Listening, 360 Reading, 350 Writing and 360 Speaking. A 350 in Reading or Speaking was a pass before and is now 10 points short.
Can I use two OET sittings?
Yes, up to two sittings within 12 months, all four sub-tests each time, and neither sitting below Listening 320, Reading 340, Writing 350 or Speaking 350. Writing has to reach 350 in both sittings.
Does AHPRA accept OET@Home for doctors?
No. Use a paper-based test or a computer test at a venue.
Does a GMC or ECFMG pass count in Australia?
Only if the same sitting also meets AHPRA's lines, test format and dates. A GMC pass with 350 in Reading, for example, is 10 points short of AHPRA's 360.
