After your result

I failed OET. What now?

Check three things, in this order: which sub-tests are below your regulator's line and by how much; whether your regulator lets you combine this sitting with another; and whether a re-mark makes sense. A re-mark is only worth it within 72 hours of results, and mostly for a Writing or Speaking score just under the line.

Combining sittings

AHPRA, the NMC, MCNZ and NCNZ let you combine two sittings within 12 months, usually with a minimum score in every sitting. The GMC, NMBI, the Medical Council of Ireland, ECFMG and Canadian medical colleges need one sitting. The checker above applies your regulator's rule.

Questions candidates ask

Should I get my OET re-marked?

Consider it only when one sub-test is within about 10 to 20 points of your line and it's the only thing keeping you out, especially Writing or Speaking. You must apply within 72 hours of your results being released. The fee is refunded if your grade changes. Candidates report waits of 2 to 6 weeks and rarely see Listening or Reading scores change.

Can I resit only the sub-test I failed?

OET offers single sub-test resits only on paper (not in the US), after a full sitting: about AU$315 for one sub-test. Many regulators won't accept them. AHPRA accepts only IELTS One Skill Retake, and the NMC and MCNZ need all four sub-tests in each sitting. Check your regulator first.

Can I combine this result with my next sitting?

With some regulators. AHPRA, the NMC, MCNZ and NCNZ allow two sittings within 12 months, usually with a minimum score in every sitting. The GMC, NMBI, the Medical Council of Ireland, ECFMG and Canadian medical colleges following the FMRAC model need all four in one sitting.

How soon can I sit OET again?

Computer tests run Monday to Saturday and close 7 days before the test; most results arrive within 6 calendar days. Paper tests run on two Saturdays a month and close 24 days before. A full sitting costs AU$587 (US$455 in the US).

Why didn't my result say what went wrong?

OET reports a score for each sub-test, not a breakdown by criterion or question. Practising with marking against each criterion, or seeing why each wrong answer was wrong, shows where the points go.
